These Peeps "Get It"

Once again, it has been far too long since I have posted, but I really do have a good excuse this time!  At the end of last month, I traveled out to San Francisco for the annual OMED Convention (for osteopathic medicine).  During this time, the Advocates to the American Osteopathic Association (AAOA) also have their annual House of Delegates meeting, and since I am active in that group, I was in attendance!

There is really lots to report from that time spent in the city, from a night trip to Alcatraz to the amazing seafood that I ate and even to the night where I walked on Lombard Street (aka, the crookedest street in the world . . . and dang steep!).  However, there was something that I experienced during that time that I can say that I rarely experience on a regular basis . . . hanging out with people that get me and my situation!

When I talk about being in temporary poverty, having moments where I feel like a single parent, or having to deal with the mistress, or what is more well known to many of us as the hospital.  I don't have to try to explain myself to these people.  I don't have to explain that my husband is not making the big bucks and that when he does that we will have such a large sum to pay in student loans every single month for the next 30 years.  There is such an unspoken understanding among us, that more time can be spent just having fun, being myself, and not worrying about being judged or stereotyped for being a doctor's wife.

My family understands me more than most people . . . I tend to be quirky and my family gets my quirkiness!  BUT, the peeps that I got to hang out with in San Francisco get the situation and circumstances better than anyone else . . . even family!  No explanations, no judgments, no preconceived notions . . . just understanding.  These peeps just "get it!"

And, all I want to do is say . . .

THANKS!!!

Your description of how everyone just "got it" is exactly why I enjoyed the Student Advocate Association so much as a medical student spouse. Now that my husband is a resident, I do not have that feeling nearly as often as I would like.

I get it!

PhilaDO_SAA . . . I know I am replying way late, but this time of year is so crazy! I did want to chime in and say that there is now an IRAA (Intern & Resident Advocate Association) that is just starting its 2nd year. I'm actually working hard on getting it up and running, assisting in getting new chapters organized across the country! That support is still there! We just need a bit more organization! Contact me if you are interested in learning more! Heck, I've found the online community is great in the absence too! :)
